Do’s and Don’ts for Packing Correctly For Your First Move

Moving day is both an exciting and nervous event. This is especially true on your first move while the entire process may seem to be overwhelming, especially if you have never done it before, it doesn’t have to be. Relax if you are a novice to moving. If you read this article, you’ll understand how to pack correctly.
Keep in mind that almost all moves are stressful
Moving is stressful because you’re leaving behind all that you’ve known and you’re embarking on a challenging journey to an unknown place. That’s enough to frighten even the hardiest of explorers. Just keep in mind that moving is a lot less stressful, if you plan every detail of it out in advance as per Northridge Movers.
Get your packing done well in advance
Procrastination is human nature, but it can be detrimental when packing. You want to make sure that as many of your items as possible are packed away before the ‘big day!’ doing so will save you lots of time and money. It will also take most of the stress out of the packing and moving process.
Calculate the dollar value of your moving supplies
It’s a given that you’ll need to buy lots of moving and packing supplies. You can save yourself a lot of time, money, and stress if you calculate the dollar value of these ahead of time and plan your moving and packing budget accordingly. Items you’ll be buying are:
- Boxes
Packing tables
Packing paper
Plastic wrapping
Plastic peanuts and bubble wrap
Permanent markers
Look to the experts
This means asking for help when you get stuck. You need to accept the fact that you will definitely not know everything in terms of packing, especially if this is your first time doing so! You can either have expert friends and family members/relatives help you or you can hire professionals.
Inventory your items
Be sure to keep track of the items that you put in boxes. Create a sheet that lists all of your belongings. Then note which boxes you have put the items in. Finally, be sure to label which items are in which boxes.
Respect your boxes’ storage capacity
Never overstuff boxes. This will overwhelm them and cause them to fall apart. Then you will definitely be facing stress from damaged and/or broken items.
Label appropriately
Be detailed about labeling the items in each box. It will allow you to understand which boxes you should be unpacking first and which rooms you should be unpacking them in.
Remember that moving is not like taking an exam
You may have pulled an ‘all-nighter’ before exam day when you were in college. Do NOT do this the day before your big moving day! Doing so will make you tired and worn out. It will also make you less able to move and unpack correctly. This increases the risk of you damaging and/or destroying your valuable items.
Never pack the things you need
If you pack your toothbrush, you’ll have to either unpack many boxes or buy a new one. Either option is a hassle on moving day. Therefore, you should never pack essential items
Take your time when unpacking
It’s a given that the unpacking process can take several days. Therefore, don’t rush through it. If you do, you may make mistakes and damage or break items when unpacking them.
