HOW TO MOVE YOUR ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES

antiques-furniture-movers

If you are a collector or someone who loves antiques, you may have many precious items in your home. When it comes time to relocate, it can be stressful to figure out how to move these items without damaging them. Our experienced Los Angeles movers know how to handle your valuable items in order to deliver them without damage.

When you are moving antiques and collectibles, you must take special care with these items.

  • Don't skimp on packing materials. Use double- and triple-walled boxes. Whenever possible, buy a specialty box for an item. Otherwise, choose boxes which are properly sized for the item. If you have the original box for a collectible item, repack it into the box, and then pack the box itself inside a box.
  • Purchase extra cushioning wrap, stretch wrap, and packing paper. You will want to fill in the spaces inside each box you pack so that nothing shakes or rattles inside the box. You will want there to be no extra space.
  • Use quality packing tape to tightly seal the box. The box should be big enough so that it does not bulge when you seal it.
  • Write on the box: "Fragile; Load Last/Unload first." Write this in large, legible writing on all sides of the box. Write it in red marker.
  • Wrap all loose parts and removable pieces. If the item has doors, fasten them with strings or rubber straps. Take off glass panels and mirrors. Wrap them in bubble wrap, padding, and stretch wrap.
  • All hardware and smaller pieces must be placed together into Ziploc bags. Label the bag so you know which parts go to what.
  • Pack delicate items by wrapping each piece by itself. Get a small box and pack only that item in the box with adequate packing materials.
  • Antique furniture items needs to be carefully prepared. Make sure to wrap the legs of tables with padding. Wrap padding around upholstered items. Then wrap the entire piece in stretch wrap.
  • Certain items you should move yourself. These include jewelry, collectible coins, important papers, prescriptions, and irreplaceable heirlooms and photos.

Important steps with your movers

  • When the moving company arrives for the estimate, point out your collectibles and antiques. Ask about anything specific the company recommends that you do to prepare the item for shipment.
  • Make sure to document your antiques and collectibles on the inventory sheet. You may need to get additional coverage on these items.
  • Some companies will offer a crating service for antiques. Discuss this option with the representative who comes for the estimate. Many companies who offer this option will build a custom-sized crate for the piece and packing it inside. You should still prepare it with padding and stretch wrap.

Antiques and collectibles can be relocated from one home to another without incident. It simply takes extra planning and care. Pack these items carefully with adequate materials. Label the boxes clearly so they do not get mixed up with other items and loaded and transported under something heavy.
